Getting a logo - things to think about.

A lot of people think that designers push the magic logo button on the computer and a new logo is instantly created.

Well its actually a lot more involved than that.

Your logo, in fact any visual representation of your business, needs to relate to your business in a way that your customers are going to understand. You want to make sure you send the right message to the right people. So a large part of the design process involves spending time with our clients discussing their business.

We talk about their goals, customers, products, hell everything they do. This gives us an overall feel for what they want to accomplish so that when we start putting pen to paper we don’t go shooting off in the wrong direction. Here is a list of things to consider before tackling your new logo:

1. Who are your target customers?
2. What products or services do you offer?
3. What goals do you have for your business?
4. How do you want your business to be perceived?
5. Who is your competition, how do they represent themselves?
6. What colours would suit?
7. What ways will your logo be represented? Print? Web? Signage?
8. What styles of imagery would suit?

Now for the hard part. Take a look at your answers and decide which ones are based on things you like and which are actually going to be best for your business. A common trap that customers fall into is deciding they want their logo to look a certain way because of something they personally like. It’s OK to love Lord of the Rings but unless you are selling swords and amour it’s best not to have an Ork waving a scimitar as your company logo.

Discussing these types of questions with your designer is a great way to focus the design process which saves you time and money. Contact us if you would like to talk about designing a new logo for your company. See some of our logo examples here.
